Expanding the Possibilities: Custom BMS Design Services

Nuvation Energy has launched a new initiative focused on providing custom BMS design services for applications where our existing BMS products are not the perfect fit.

As energy storage continues to evolve, new applications, unique constraints, and technical challenges are constantly emerging. To help our customers meet these challenges, we now offer custom BMS design services to support the development and commercialization of energy storage technologies across a wide range of industries.

Nuvation Engineering was founded in 1997 as an engineering design services company. Headquartered in Silicon Valley, California with an office in Waterloo, Ontario, we’ve completed more than 1,000 successful projects involving embedded hardware, software, and FPGA development. Nuvation Energy was founded in 2010 to focus on battery management systems specifically. With the addition of our new BMS Design Services offering, we’re bringing together both areas of expertise to deliver custom BMS solutions through a proven engineering services framework.

Nuvation Energy remains fully committed to growing and supporting our existing line of BMS products. Over the past 15 years, we’ve carefully defined the role each product plays in the energy storage space. While we’ve built in as much flexibility as possible, every design has its limits. When new opportunities arise, we assess whether our current products are a match, whether a modified version could be developed, or whether a fully custom solution is required.

Custom BMS designs are often needed for novel or experimental systems, very small form factors, extreme environments, or non-technical requirements such as cost targets, specific country-of-origin needs, or the desire to manage and own the design internally.

Project models vary depending on the project. Our goal is to deliver the best possible outcome for our clients while maintaining our ability to continue offering high-performance BMS products. This program enables customers to access custom engineering that aligns best with their system requirements. We can support everything from prototyping through to manufacturing hand-off, whether production happens domestically or overseas. All of our engineering is done in the USA and Canada.

While we’ve just recently launched this as a distinct services, Nuvation has been executing on custom BMS projects for over a decade.  As far back as 2013, we designed a BMS for a company transitioning its liquid-metal battery from the lab to commercial deployment. Their requirements were significantly different from what our products offered at the time, so we launched a design service project based on their specifications. The result was a 36-channel BMS with 10A cell balancing, optimized for lab work and streamlined for data collection. Our team also spent time on-site with our customer to ensure the system was fully operational.
