Custom Energy Control for Advanced Applications
Extended Management of BESS and Distributed Energy Resources
Extended Management of BESS and Distributed Energy Resources
An nController Extension Program enables advanced features to be equipped to the nController in addition to the standard product capabilities. These extensions can enable further opportunity to generate value from your energy storage and other distributed energy resources (DERs). For these programs Nuvation Energy works directly with clients to create extensions based on customer-specific application requirements.

Example Extension Applications
Demand Charge Management: Load Following
- Benefits: Load Following algorithms can be configured to dynamically respond to real-time load changes enabling a more optimized response to peak loads as measured by a power meter.
- How: Load following algorithm monitors power measurements at the site to determine when to charge and discharge the BESS.
- Architecture: Install an AC-BESS block and a power metering device at the point of interest. Configure the nController load following policies with scheduled power and energy set points.

Demand Charge Management: Solar Self-Consumption / Zero Export
- Benefits: Some jurisdictions require green energy projects to be designed to ensure that energy is not exported from the local site to the utility grid, or if they do allow export sometimes, they do not pay for exported energy. Solar Self Consumption feature manages the assets to store energy locally so that it can be used later when the loads exceed generation.
- How: The nController monitors site loads, generation, and manages BESS charge and discharge to optimize usage locally of locally generated energy.
- Architecture: Install an AC-BESS block and a power metering device at the point of interest. Configure the nController policies with scheduled power and energy set points. Some sites may also require curtailment of generation under certain edge conditions.

Scalable AC-BESS Management
- Benefits: Enable control of two or more BESS AC-blocks as if they were one.
- How: The nController Plant Controller is configured to manage two or more AC-coupled BESS units through their associated nController. The plant controller aggregates the BESS information to allow higher-level controllers to control the set of batteries as if they were one unit.
- Architecture: Install two or more AC-BESS blocks and an nController plant controller. Configure the plant controller to connect to the nController for each AC-BESS block.

Management of DC-Coupled Assets
- Benefits: Coupling generation and loads to the battery DC bus can provide advantages for efficiency and sometimes for control reasons too. It is an architectural decision that impacts the controls design.
- How: Architectural design, selection of compatible components, and selection of the appropriate algorithms.
- Architecture: BESS design must support integration of compatible components at the DC-bus. The components must support curtailment.
